Mill Cabinet Carpentry

Custom Cabinets

How would it feel to walk into some of the finest establishments in the area and view your own artistry? You can become one of the many highly skilled craftsmen that help shape and craft many of the buildings, schools, churches, and restaurants in the Chicagoland area.

The Carpenters Apprentice and Training Program provides a four-year mill cabinet and display apprenticeship that combines both relevant instructional courses and on-the-job training. Experience in the mill cabinet apprentice program will include custom architectural cabinetry, store fixtures and displays, exhibits, and staircases.

The mill cabinet profession is a great choice for detail-oriented persons who strive for perfection, likes working with their hands, and likes working on various machines.

As a mill cabinet apprentice, you will be working with some of the finest materials and tools in the industry. Apprentices will learn how to use machines such as table saws, planers, jointers, computer controlled machines (CNC), molding machines, and more.

Pre-Apprentice Program: 9 Weeks

The Pre-apprenticeship program offers persons wanting to join the union with no experience the training necessary to work as a beginning carpenter.

The Mill Cabinet 9-continuous-week program combines class subjects (safety, math, print reading, carpentry topics) with shop projects (safety, layout). One-third of the Pre-Apprentice (PA) day is spent in the class, two-thirds in the shop. PA class work includes regular homework assignments and ongoing quizzes and tests. Time is also devoted each day to physical training and material handling.

A stipend is paid to the PA for each week of class. Upon successful completion of the program the new apprentice receives a set of hand tools, the initiation fees, and first quarter’s Union Dues.
